SMS is the university's Stage Musical Society whose aim is to stage two full length musicals each year and to have as much fun as possible in doing so. Recent shows have been Oklahoma, Anything goes, Grease, Footloose, West Side story and Crazy for you! They all over their respective one week run and proved a massive hit with the university viewers and indeed our outside audiences. The society is totally student run resulting in the direction, production, lighting, staging, coreographing, vocal coaching and performing of each musical being down to whoever is brave enough to step forward and give it a go. Each show is produced to a very high standard but it remains SMS policy that if you want to have a go....you can; there are no exceptions within our society. Each show is self funded from the sales of previous performances as well as sponsored by various organisations willing to help out the performance. Back staging, similarly, is conducted totally through the back stage society without whose continual help and support we would not be able to survive as a society...cheers guys! So if you're a spontaneous and fun loving sort of person that isn't afraid of the odd bit of dancing and singing then make sure you register to this site and keep watch over the forum to check on audition dates for up and coming shows. Similarly if you're a fresher about to start university make sure you come and see us at the freshers fair to find out some more and of course take a peek at some of the photos in the gallery section to see the results of our last two shows. Remember, we are a society that prides ourselves on not taking things too seriously, putting on great cheesy and lively musicals each semester and ensuring that drunkeness and general raucous behaviour is integral to keeping the society alive...we hope to see many new faces soon SMS is one of the many societies you can get involved in as a member of Leeds University. As a society, our main aim is to stage two musicals each academic year (December and March), and to encourage as many people to get involved in whatever aspect of the production, be it on the stage or off it, as possible. The main attraction of SMS though, aside from the fabulous shows we stage, is the social side. Many people have had some of their best times at University within the show, usually during the carnage that makes up the show-week, and that's why many of the cast come back term after term .......such as Bryn for example, who we just can't seem to get rid of. We also go on an annual SMS holiday, such as this summer where we hired a 23 person chateau in France! A usual rehearsal week will involve a Friday evening singing rehearsal followed by the old bar or terrace, and then the dance rehearsal on Sunday afternoons, where the lads get to show off their finely honed dance moves. Things heat up though as show week approaches, and culminate in a week we doubt you'll forget, where too much alcohol ultimately leads to a fair few stories in the changing rooms for a few days after (or a few shows if you're as notorious as a few of our members) Past SMS shows include 'Hair', 'West Side Story', 'Sweet Charity', 'Me & My Girl', 'Crazy For You' and 'Grease', along with many more, because this society has been in the University Union for over twenty years. ...and that's about it.
